In a recent Reddit AMA, Ethereum’s chief scientists and well-known crypto savant, Vitalik Buterin confirmed he holds several different cryptocurrencies outside of Ethereum.

He stated in summary for Reddit members that:

“Non-Ethereum-ecosystem tokens: BCH, BTC, DOGE, ZEC; total value < 10% the value of my ETH.

Non-ETH Ethereum ecosystem tokens: KNC, MKR, OMG, REP, total value <10% the value of my ETH.

Significant corporate shareholdings: Clearmatics, Starkware [edit, forgot to put this in before]

Revenue in the last 12 months other than Ethereum foundation salary: a few advisor tokens (included in above)

Non-financial interests: friends in the ecosystems represented by the above projects, as well as some non-token Ethereum ecosystem orgs (eg. L4, Plasma Group, EthGlobal, EDCON) and non-token non-Ethereum orgs (mainly professional cryptography and economics circles)”

In what was quite an unexpectedly candid post, Buterin confirmed his current crypto holdings as well as being a shareholder in Clearmatics and Starkware.

Clearmatics is a startup developing “the next-generation clearing machines for financial OTC markets.” While Starkware is “developing the Full Proof Stack for the STARK zero-knowledge protocol.”

Among this, he also declared:

  • He received a salary in the past 12 months from the Ethereum foundation and an undisclosed amount of a ‘few advisor tokens.’
  • Buterin has a non-financial interest in L$, which is creating Web3, with one of its projects being counterfactual smart contracts.
  • Has non-financial interests in Plasma Group, EDCON, and EthGlobal. Plasma is a Layer 2 scaling method still in development. EDCON was one of the most popular crypto conferences in 2018 and EthGlobal organizes hackathons worldwide.

Buterin has 350k Eth, worth approximately $50 million.

This also means he currently has less than $5 million worth of BCH, Bitcoin. Dogecoin and Zcash, with a further $5 million in KNC, MKR, OMG, and REP.

The above self-disclosure was done as a response to the recent complaints about a potential conflict of interest in Afri Schoedon being an Ethereum Release Manager while continuing to work for Parity Tech, which is collaborating on Polkadot. Schoedon announced recently that has now quit Ethereum.
